Nail polish...

Ahhhh....summer is coming! I can feel it in the air! The trees are beginning to bud, the tulips are in bloom....and I'm itching to wear sandals!

I love wearing sandals...my feet can breathe...and I can wear all sorts of different colors on my toes! Red....or Salsa...purple....and even blue! I can't wait. And toe rings! I love toe rings...

Sigh....I think I'll go paint my toes now...

Tax Day...

Congratulations if you already have your taxes done and in the mail! You are my idol if you already have your refund!! I mailed my taxes out on Tuesday, even though I finished them about six weeks ago. It bugs me that I owe my state a lousy two bucks! I have to write a check for two dollars??? Sheesh...but it could be worse...I am thankful that's all I owe!

So, to celebrate tax day today, I went to the grocery store and bought several of my favorite things to cook. I love guacamole, so bought some avacados and limes. I also love greens, you know, the old fashioned southern-style greens?!?! Can't wait to clean them, chop them, and cook them the way my grandmother used to make them.

The bird.

Who would have thought that my dumb dog could actually catch a bird? I mean, aren't birds programmed to fly away when the big dumb dogs run at them??

As I open the back door to let the dogs in, she runs toward the door with something in her mouth...I think it's a toy, and tell her to drop it. She drops it, comes in the house, and I see that it's a bird. And as ragged as it is, it's still alive. It's wing all but torn off, one of it's legs broken, and it's innards spilling out where my dog has torn it apart. And it's still alive.

So I calmly walk to the garage, grab some garden gloves, two trowels, and take the bird to the water bucket that collects rainwater near the garden. The only thing I can think to do is drown the bird to put it out of it's misery as quickly as I can. There's no saving the bird from it's injuries. And as much as it made my cry to kill the bird, I can't let it suffer.

It didn't take long, but damn, that bird didn't want to die. It struggled so hard to live, and all I could do was cry and say "I'm sorry"...over and over and over, until it stopped struggling...and was still.

I buried the bird in the back yard. I put a decorative garden stone over the grave. I'm not angry with the dog...she's just doing what predators do naturally. I hate that I had to be witness and accomplice to the crime. And even hours later, I'm still so sad.
